NADA Calls For Shift In Perspective On Employability As Youth Month Begins

SOUTH AFRICA, Johannesburg, 04 June 2026: As Youth Month commemorations kick into high gear, the National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) has called for a critical shift in how the nation approaches youth unemployment and graduate employability. NADA highlights that while the country is producing graduates at scale, addressing the employment gap requires moving beyond academic qualifications toward environments that foster true work-readiness.

“It’s a given that South Africa’s graduates need jobs. However, a qualification alone is no longer enough,” says Ashley Samuel, National Director of NADA. “Employers today are hiring capability, critical thinking, and adaptability. Many graduates leave tertiary institutions academically prepared but practically underexposed.”

The Modern Dealership: A Fast-Track for Career Growth

While the national debate around graduate unemployment continues, NADA points to the automotive retail sector as a powerhouse for real-world, skills-driven career development.

Modern dealerships have evolved far beyond their traditional image. Today, they operate as highly complex, multi-functional businesses that integrate Sales and Marketing, Finance and Insurance, Logistics and Compliance, Customer Experience and Advanced Technical Operations.

This diverse ecosystem creates a unique environment where multiple career paths intersect, allowing young professionals to learn by doing. In a dealership, graduates are immersed in responsibility from day one – engaging with customers, analysing data, and contributing directly to business decisions.

“This builds the very skills employers are demanding, faster than many traditional corporate pathways,” Samuel notes. “It is an industry where performance matters, initiative is rewarded, and upward mobility is driven by experience, not just credentials. Many of today’s industry leaders started at entry level.”

An Industry Evolving with the Future

The call for talent comes at a time of massive structural and technological transformation within the automotive retail sector. The rapid adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), the rise of digital retail and omnichannel sales platforms, and an increased focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliance are reshaping traditional models.

Data analytics is now central to dealership operations, driving inventory optimisation, predictive maintenance, and customer behaviour profiling. This technological evolution opens lucrative career doors for graduates specialising in technology, data science, sustainability, marketing, and finance.

Bridging the Awareness Gap

NADA notes that the barrier to entry is not necessarily a lack of opportunity, but a lack of awareness. Too many young South Africans do not view automotive dealerships as viable, sophisticated career destinations.

To combat this, initiatives like Motoring Mavericks are actively working to reshape how the industry is perceived and to showcase the diverse, high-growth career paths available to the youth.

“If we are serious about tackling youth unemployment, we need to rethink the pathways into work,” concludes Samuel. “Degrees open doors, but environments build careers. For many graduates, the future may not lie in waiting for a conventional ‘perfect job,’ but in stepping into dynamic spaces like retail auto dealerships where they can rapidly learn, grow, and prove their value.”
