Reflections on My First 90 Days at NADA
It’s hard to believe it’s already been 90 days since stepping into the role of National Director of NADA. The past three months have been nothing short of intense, but also deeply fulfilling. From my first day, it was clear this is more than just a job—it’s a calling to serve and uplift one of the most vital sectors of the South African economy.
A major part of my journey so far has involved connecting with members across the country through our regional AGMs. Each one brought with it a renewed sense of purpose and regional pride—from the vibrant Western Cape to the tenacity of the Free State and Northern Cape, and the resilient spirit of KwaZulu-Natal. It’s been a privilege to hear from Dealer Principals, OEM reps, and committee members on what matters most to them. These meetings weren’t just formalities—they were opportunities for real conversation and, in many cases, a few laughs over shared stories from the floor. I look forward to connecting with NADA members based in Gauteng later this month.
One memorable highlight during this period was visiting Cars.co.za in Cape Town. As a lifelong car enthusiast, walking into their space was like stepping into a petrolhead’s dream. From the iconic Opel Super Boss, and BMW 325is Evo 1, to a mint Alfa Romeo 156, the showroom was packed with living history. But what really took my breath away was their rare 3.0 GTV6, lovingly preserved and locked away like a crown jewel in a vault. It reminded me that this industry is not just about sales—it’s about passion, legacy, and storytelling.
Another standout moment was receiving the heartfelt support of Gary McCraw, Brandon Cohen and Thembinkosi Pantsi. Gary, who has handed over the baton with exceptional grace. Gary’s wisdom, patience, and openness made my transition into the role significantly easier. His mentorship has been both grounding and inspiring, and I remain incredibly grateful for the foundation he’s laid.
My focus so far has been on listening—to members, to staff, and to the changing rhythm of our industry. Whether it’s grappling with compliance complexities, championing youth skills development, or modernising the value we bring to dealers, I’m committed to driving positive change.
As we move forward, I’m excited to strengthen relationships, open new conversations, and continue building a NADA that is as future-fit as it is member-focused. Thank you for the warm welcome—I look forward to the road ahead, potholes and all.

TOYOTA KEEPS GOING RIGHT FOR SA WOMEN
August’s Women’s Month presents a timely opportunity to reflect on evolving trends – particularly in women’s car preferences. Women in South Africa are steadily gaining ground in financed vehicle purchases, now accounting for 39% – up from 32% a decade ago.
When it comes to car brands, Toyota tops women’s car preferences, followed by VW and Suzuki. And Crossover/SUVs have overtaken Hatches as the preferred body shape. Women also favour financing options with linked interest rates.
21 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE: TATA TRUCK AND BUS BLOEMFONTEIN LEADS WITH HEART AND RESULTS
Tata Truck and Bus Bloemfontein, now 21 years strong, earned top honours at the 2025 Tata Dealer Conference: Best CSI, Best Parts Sales, and Best Category 2 New Vehicle Sales.
This success, despite operating in a small province, is credited to a family-focused, customer-first approach. With trusted team members like Kevin Scott and JJ Pienaar, the dealership enjoys high return business and minimal marketing spend thanks to word of mouth. Serving even neighbouring countries, Tata Bloemfontein proves that trust, practical solutions, and uptime-focused service go a long way.
DRIVING CHANGE: WESTVAAL WHITE RIVER ISUZU’S COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION AND EXCELLENCE
Westvaal White River Isuzu, in partnership with the Isuzu Foundation, contributed R210,470 to launch the Rural Junior Honorary Rangers programme with SANParks. This initiative introduces Grade 8 learners from local schools to conservation, fostering pride in South Africa’s natural heritage.
The dealership continues to uplift its community beyond vehicle sales. Adding to the celebration, Nicolene Miller, recently promoted to Parts Manageress, won Isuzu’s Parts Department of the Year — a remarkable achievement just 12 months into her new role.
TRANSFORMING QUEEN STREET: A LOCAL DEALERSHIP’S INVESTMENT IN SAFER, GREENER SPACES
Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Bruma is helping uplift the Queen Street precinct through its involvement with Better Queen Street (BQS), a community-led initiative focused on safety, cleanliness, and beautification. As chair of BQS, Ravi Perumal has supported projects like CCTV installations, verge maintenance, and local partnerships — including with Clean Village and the CPF.
The improvements have received praise from residents and customers alike, showing how business-led efforts can revitalise neighbourhoods and build stronger, more connected communities.
WAGE NEGOTIATIONS 2025 – UPDATE FOLLOWING FINAL ROUND
The final round of wage negotiations took place on 1 August 2025. During this session, parties engaged constructively on the latest wage proposals submitted by NUMSA, as referenced in our communication dated 15 July 2025.
Following these discussions, it was agreed that the RMI would engage further with representatives from Component Manufacturing Sector (Chapter 3) to obtain a renewed mandate.
A three-year settlement framework is expected to be drafted by MIBCO during the course of this week. Once finalised, the full details of the wage agreement will be communicated to all members.
